Shinobi is one of the classics of left to right, oriental combat oriented platformers. But the DOS version is by no means the best one there is.

What it lacks is the crispiness of the original, offering you a rather duller experience overall. You control a samurai and his arsenal of common and less common weapons. You have access to close quarters weapons as well as long range ones, though the later need to be used more sparsely, since they don’t regenerate.

There are also portions where enemies are scarcer but instead you have to manage the way you tackle the platforms. However, the game doesn’t get exceedingly difficult, though it has its dose of enemies that get thrown at you without being able to prepare and some bosses that feel a bit too unfairly overpowered. At any rate, for a better than your average ninja themed platformer, this one sure delivers, and if you aren’t too demanding with the graphics, you don’t really have any reason to worry, the game is not bad, not bad at all.

It’s just a lesser version of the Sega Master System original, so if you can play that one, you’d be much better off.

There are three ninjutsu techniques in the game a thunderstorm, a tornado and a doppelganger attack that vary depending on the stage, although the effect is the same no matter which technique Musashi uses only the animation changes.

Enemy characters include punks, mercenaries, various kinds of ninjas clad in different colors and the Mongolian swordsmen who are guarding each hostage.

To complete a mission, the player must rescue all of the kidnapped children on each level, with the number of hostages remaining displayed on a meter in the bottom left corner of the screen. The Shinobi Ninja begins each level armed with either ‘shuriken’ throwing stars or a gun for long-range attacks; and a Samurai sword for close-range combat. In addition, the Ninja also has one ‘Magic Attack’ per level; a smart bomb which kills or damages all on-screen enemies.

A points bonus is awarded whenever a level is completed without the Magic Attack being used. An end-of-level guardian awaits the player at the end of each mission, and each takes several hits before it is killed.

Once a boss is defeated, the player is taken to a bonus stage in which a large number of Ninjas will try to ‘jump’ from the back of the screen to the front to attack the player. A bonus life is awarded if the player manages to kill all of the Ninjas without being attacked. Shinobi was a huge success for Sega, and deservedly so. Its perfectly realized blend of platform and fighting action and is as fine an exponent of the ‘easy to get into, difficult to master’ gameplay ethic as video games have seen.

In addition, the Ninja also has one ‘Magic Attack’ per level; a smart bomb which kills or damages all on-screen enemies. A points bonus is awarded whenever a level is completed without the Magic Attack being used. An end-of-level guardian awaits the player at the end of each mission, and each takes several hits before it is killed. Musashi’s standard weapons are an unlimited supply of shurikens, along with punches and kicks when attacking at close range. Rescuing certain hostages in each stage will grant him an attack upgrade. When powered up, his throwing stars are replaced by a gun that fires large, explosive bullets, and his close-range attack becomes a katana slash. Musashi’s ninjutsu techniques can only be used once per stage and will clear the screen of all enemies, or in the case of enemy bosses, greatly damage them.

There are three ninjutsu techniques in the game a thunderstorm, a tornado and a doppelganger attack that vary depending on the stage, although the effect is the same no matter which technique Musashi uses only the animation changes. Enemy characters include punks, mercenaries, various kinds of ninjas clad in different colors and the Mongolian swordsmen who are guarding each hostage.
