An issue has been identified where devices can lose activation status or be blocked from upgrading to Windows Enterprise if the device is not able to connect to Windows Update. To determine if the computer has a firmware-embedded activation key, type the following command at an elevated Windows PowerShell prompt:. If the device has a firmware-embedded activation key, it will be displayed in the output. If the output is blank, the device does not have a firmware embedded activation key. Most OEM-provided devices designed to run Windows 8 or later will have a firmware-embedded key.
If you are an EA customer with an existing Office tenant, use the following steps to enable Windows 10 Subscription licenses on your existing tenant:. After placing an order, the OLS admin on the agreement will receive a service activation email, indicating their subscription licenses have been provisioned on the tenant.
Use the following process if you need to update contact information and retrigger activation in order to resend the activation email:. In the Subscription Contact section, click the name listed under Last Name. Update the contact information, then click Update Contact Details. This will trigger a new email. Users will use their domain-based credentials to sign in to the AD DS domain.
You might ask why you need to synchronize these identities. The answer is so that users will have a single identity that they can use to access their on-premises apps and cloud services that use Azure AD such as Windows 10 Enterprise E3 or E5.
This means that users can use their existing credentials to sign in to Azure AD and access the cloud services that you provide and manage for them. Azure AD Connect is a service that you can install on-premises or in a virtual machine in Azure.
If you are implementing Azure AD, and you already have an on-premises domain, you don’t need to integrate with Azure AD, since your main authentication method is your internal AD. If you want to manage all your infrastructure in the cloud, you can safely configure your domain controller remotely to integrate your computers with Azure AD, but you won’t be able to apply fine controls using GPO.
Azure AD is best suited for the global administration of devices when you don’t have any on-premises servers. Customers who are federated with Azure Active Directory are also eligible. For more information, see Review requirements on devices , later in this topic. Upon acquisition of Windows 10 subscription has been completed Windows 10 Business, E3 or E5 , customers will receive an email that will provide guidance on how to use Windows as an online service:.
When you have the required Azure AD subscription, group-based licensing is the preferred method to assign Enterprise E3 or E5 licenses to users. A per-user PowerShell scripted method of assigning licenses is available.
Organizations can use synchronized AD groups to automatically assign licenses. Now that your subscription has been established and Windows 10 Enterprise E3 or E5 licenses have been assigned to users, the users are ready to upgrade their devices running Windows 10 Pro, version or later to Windows 10 Enterprise. What will the users experience? How will they upgrade their devices? Users can join a Windows 10 Pro device to Azure AD the first time they start the device during setup , or they can join a device that they already use running Windows 10 Pro, version During the initial setup, on the Who owns this PC?
To join a device to Azure AD when the device already has Windows 10 Pro, version installed and set up. If your device is running Windows 10, version or later, this step is not needed.
From Windows 10, version , the device will automatically activate Windows 10 Enterprise using the firmware-embedded activation key. Figure 7a – Windows 10 Pro activation in Settings. Windows 10 Pro activation is required before Enterprise E3 or E5 can be enabled Windows 10, versions and only. Once the device is joined to your Azure AD subscription, the user will sign in by using his or her Azure AD account, as illustrated in Figure 8. The Windows 10 Enterprise E3 or E5 license associated with the user will enable Windows 10 Enterprise edition capabilities on the device.
If there are any problems with the Windows 10 Enterprise E3 or E5 license or the activation of the license, the Activation panel will display the appropriate error message or status. You can use this information to help you diagnose the licensing and activation process. Subscriptions to Windows 10 Enterprise are also available for virtualized clients.
Active Directory-joined and Azure Active Directory-joined clients are supported. In some instances, users may experience problems with the Windows 10 Enterprise E3 or E5 subscription. The most common problems that users may experience are as follows:.
The existing Windows 10 Pro, version or operating system is not activated. This problem does not apply to Windows 10, version or later. Figure 9 see the section above illustrates a device in a healthy state, where Windows 10 Pro is activated and the Windows 10 Enterprise subscription is active.
Figure 10 below illustrates a device on which Windows 10 Pro is not activated, but the Windows 10 Enterprise subscription is active. Figure 10 – Windows 10 Pro, version edition not activated in Settings. Figure 11 below illustrates a device on which Windows 10 Pro is activated, but the Windows 10 Enterprise subscription is lapsed or removed. You can use the following procedures to review whether a particular device meets requirements. If a device is running a version of Windows 10 Pro prior to version for example, version , it will not be upgraded to Windows 10 Enterprise when a user signs in, even if the user has been assigned a subscription in the CSP portal.

Disclaimer: I am not a licensing expert and quite sure some of the following conflicts with license agreements. After a reboot I was presented with this: No question for domain join or user — just a login prompt.
So, I started to search and only found one hint on twitter about the Insiders Build that the only options are to reset the password with a tool or add a new user. Now we need to replace the Utility Manager from the normal Login-Screen with the cmd. To replace the Utility Manager with a cmd enter the following commands:.
Time to boot Windows again. Now press the Utility Manager Icon on the bottom right side. Voila: A command prompt with elevated rights :.
The next step is to create an account and add this one to the local admin group. Therefore, you need to enter the following commands:. And voila — you can now login with your just created user without a password :. For my first tests I just wanted to connect multiple users to the machine without joining the VM to the AD to prevent impacts by policies or something else. I created three local users:. When I logged of my created Administrator all three had been available on the Welcome-Screen to Login:.
A RDP connection was not possible at this time. As you can see Remote Desktop was not allowed:. Oh no! Some styles failed to load. Help Create Join Login. Application Development. IT Management. Project Management.

Log on to the MultiPoint Server host operating system with a local Administrator account or, in domain, a domain account that is a member of the local Administrators group. In Prefix , enter a prefix to use to identify the template and the virtual desktops created with the template.
The default prefix is the host computer name. The prefix is used to name the template and the virtual desktop stations. Enter a username and password to use for the local Administrator account for the template. In a domain, enter the credentials for a domain account that will be added to the local Administrators group.
This account can be used to log on to the template and all virtual desktop stations created from the template. The new template will be listed on the Virtual Desktops tab. The template will be turned off. Your next step is to configure the template with the software and setting that you want on the virtual desktops.
You must do this before you create any virtual desktops from the template. Log on to the MultiPoint server host operating system with a local administrator account or, in a domain, with a domain account in the local Administrators group.
Select the template that you want to customize, click Customize template , and then click OK. Only the templates that have not been used to create virtual desktop stations are available.
If you want to update a template that is already in use, you must make a copy of the template by using the Import template task, described later, in Copy an existing virtual desktop template. The template opens in a Hyper-V VM Connect window, and auto-logon is performed using the built-in Administrator account. This is an important distinction. Anyone can run multi-user Windows 10 — but only in Azure. This does present the opportunity to vendors like Citrix, VMware, Workspot, or Parallels to offer an Azure-based solution that includes multi-user Windows I would guess this could be particularly attractive to Workspot as today they leverage RDP in their current offering, so this could make perfect sense for them.
Is Windows 10 multi-user a step in the right direction? With that brief history lesson out of the way…. It IS a modern Microsoft Remote Desktop Azure-based infrastructure service that you can use for publishing multi-user Windows 10 desktops, single-user personal virtual desktops and even publish applications. It can be a building block or even a foundation for vendors like Citrix or VMware to use for their popular EUC products if they so choose.
Citrix, VMware, and others in this space have always provided superior tooling than native RDS for managing virtual desktops and publishing applications.
Now there is very little to separate the protocols. I think the flow for creating images and updating them in WVD could probably be a lot better , but in an odd way, working through the Azure portal and using snaps in the Azure Virtual Machines is a better workflow than in the past too.
